The proverb means that if we correct a mistake in time it saves us from a lot of trouble. If we do not correct it in time, it may bring great hardship and loss. So, if we find any mistake, we should set it right quickly. A mistake should be nipped in the bud. If it is left uncorrected then it will grow bigger and bigger and require a good deal of labour to set it right later. Human nature is not perfect. We are prone to commit mistakes. We should not be afraid of our mistakes. On the other hand, we should try correct them otherwise it becomes formidable and beyond our power to correct them. Mistakes need prompt attention.

If a piece of cloth is torn at a point we should stitch it at once. If it is not mended in time then the hole will grow bigger and bigger and need a lot of stitching. If there is hole in a roof, it should be repaired quickly. A bad habit can be checked in the beginning. If it is allowed to grow, it becomes very difficult to correct it later. If the patient is treated in time, he may be cured. If the disease is allowed to grow then one may have to lose his life. So we should learn to correct a mistake in time. If we leave it uncorrected, it will require great efforts to correct it later and may cause a lot of trouble.

The proverb means that a great work cannot be done in a short time. Every great work requires hard labour and continued efforts. Time is an important factor in doing any work. Even a small work requires a bit of time and labour. One has to toil continuously for a long time to accomplish a great deal of perspiration and preservation. We should not expect to finish a great work in a short time. We must be prepared to labour hard. We should not be hasty. If we try to finish a great task quickly, we cannot accomplish it. Haste leads to failure and grief. We can achieve success only by dint of hard labour and long struggle. We can learn this from the lives of great men. They achieved fame and success after years of hard work.

In ancient time, Rome was the capital of the great Roman Empire. It was the pride and glory of the Romans. It did not grow up suddenly into a big city. The Romans worked at it for a number of years and turned it into a glorious city. The Roman Empire itself was the result of hard work and struggle. Prithvi Narayan Shah unified Nepal after years of hard struggle. The America landed man on the moon after years of research and trial. Everest was conquered after a series of attempts. A great work cannot be finished in a short time. It can be accomplished only after hard labour extending over a number of years.
